There is a well-hidden place adjoining Namadgi called “Punchbowl” – Not many people know of its existence, as it is all but impossible to get in! – No one knows what is in there! The Punchbowl is formed from a natural circle of impassable mountains surrounding the infamous White Horse Flats. There is only one known way into there, and that is along the Booroomba Rd! However, the Booroomba Rd is private property, is heavily fortified and well guarded! (I tried going that way once to get to the Castle on Castle Hill, but turned around pronto!)
For eons now there have been rumours of possibly another way in! A well-hidden secret Pass, also fortified, but no longer guarded! But to this day, no-one has ever found it!
That is, until now! After half a lifetime of searching, I have found the entrance to the secret Pass! It is a secret back way – a hidden Pass long forgotten! This Pass is not marked on any maps! It is rumoured that the Pass was used by the original occupants of White Horse Flats to get supplies when their front entrance was under siege!
This pass is clearly an ancient track (mysteriously maintained to this day) that follows the Punch Bowl Creek all the way into the heart of the White Horse Flats. To find the Punchbowl Pass cache you don’t need to go all the way down to White Horse Flats - Hey, not even I am that adventurous – maybe the more adventurous of you can continue further and tell me what you discover! Whilst seeking this cache, you will remain well within the relative safety of the Namadgi National Park! (Not that Namadgi is safe by any means).
To find this cache, start at the entrance to the Pass – I have provided the coordinates. It is well hidden, and invisible to the unaided eye, but the coordinates are accurate, and you should find it easily enough! Now follow the well worn foot track – no bush bashing required, (except for the last 20m or so) until you come across an ancient rusty iron gate (coordinates provided) – this was rumoured to be used to seal off the back entrance if the Pass was ever discovered! Now continue on for another 20m or so, and then head back toward the top of the waterfall! The cache is located about 5m from the top of the falls, (and about 1m higher). Be careful this is a dangerous area, the waterfall drops about 20m here!
