Hatfield Peverel is the site of a priory founded by the Saxon
Ingelrica, wife of Ranulf de Peverel, she is reputed to have been
the mistress of William the Conqueror. The priory was for
Benedictine Monks and dissolved by Henry VIII. The church stands
adjacent to the priory ruin, now the site of a mansion. The house
is now very well concealed but very impressive if you can catch a
glance.
The present church is the nave of the former priory church and
is of Norman origin with many later additions, including extensive
restoration in 1873.
