A short walk to a professionally built treehouse with fabulous
views down Loch Fyne, ideal for families.
We have waited nearly a year to place our first cache, during this
time we have found some cleverly hidden caches in some wonderful
locations, some of which we would never have been to had it not
been for geocaching. As a family one of our favourite walks is to
the professionally made two-storey tree house, on the hill behind
the Ardkinglass Treeshop. It is a way-marked, maintained walk,
ideally suited for families and dogs. Good strong footwear is
recommended in the winter months as the path does get a bit muddy.
An ideal spot for a picnic as there is a large picnic bench at the
treehouse and the views over Loch Fyne are lovely. If you park at
the Oyster Bar (where Gordon Brown and John Prescott, sat in the
back of a ministerial Jaguar and argued as to who should succeed
Tony Blair in May 2004), you can follow the “coffin
road” past an ancient burial ground up the hill to the huge
ash tree that supports the house. When you cross the small wooden
bridge, the easier route to the treehouse is by the lower
better-maintained path. In summer raspberries grow along this path,
in autumn brambles. A feature worth looking for is the Butterwort
and Sundew plants in the ditches doing their best to get rid of the
midges. On Sunday afternoons in summer the locals play cricket in
the field to your left as you walk back to the carpark. There is
ample parking at the Oyster Bar and Treeshop, and the path you need
is clearly marked with a finger post at the gate at the entrance to
the car park. The original cache contents were: A logbook, A first
to find badge, key ring, bingo pen, space chimp, 2 water games,
“bratz” maze game, 2 mini jigsaws, some flower seeds, 5
Scotland pencils, a caterpillar rubber, a bangle and small heart
shaped rubber. This cache is perfect for the kids, both young and
old, set up and planned by a family, so if you could follow this
theme, there should always be things in this cache that young
cachers would be pleased to swap.
