Ligando as duas margens do rio Gilão,
aspecto actual.
EN: Also known
as "Old Bridge", it’s one of the symbols of Tavira. About its
origin there are divergent theories, and the more likely is the
existence of an earlier Roman bridge of the third century, which
has been rebuilt, or even a built in its place in early medieval
period, which some also call this bridge the “Roman Bridge of
Tavira”.
Linking the
two banks of the river Gilão in the center of Tavira, this bridge
has therefore undergone several changes over the centuries, but in
the seventeenth century it receives its current appearance. Since
1989, during the great flood that took place here, the bridge
became pedestrian.
Today
it’s required point of passage for its beauty and asymmetry,
with a beautiful landscape of the city of
Tavira.

PT: A Ponte
e estabeleceu as tão necessárias comunicações neste Sotavento
Algarvio.
EN: The Roman Bridge is the ex-libris
of the city and it has a great importance as a route of communication that over time merges the
two sides of the village and established the much needed
communications in East Algarve.
EN: Much has been said about the original
manufacturers. Some say that the old bridge was built by the
Romans, and others give it a much more advanced
age.

antigos.
É portanto uma ponte, originariamente, Romana.
EN: Everything is possible but the current
track is not as remote, some old graphics documents seem to prove
it and few written descriptions refer it to be much
older.
It's a bridge, originally,
Roman.
PT: Em 1666 George
Cardoso já informa que a
ponte "é torreada no princípio o no fim".
EN: In 1666 George Cardoso has
announced that the bridge "has towers in the start and at the
end".
EN: In 1712, António Carvalho da
Costa Priest, in Vol.III of "Portuguese Corografia" says that "the
bridge of Tavira has seven arches".
EN: Colonel
engineer Sande de Vasconcelos, in "Plan of Tavira" informs that
"the bridge was rebuilt by the Romans and by the Count Vale de
Réis, the third grandfather of Marquês de Loulé.
PT: Mas será realmente romana a ponte? Tudo
EN: But is it
really a roman bridge? It seems not. Probably in the time of roman
there was(probably in the same place) a Roman construction. But
what there is in Roman type of construction is therefore more
correct to call it is Romanesque.
EN: The north side of the bridge was called the "Door of S. Brás"
and it was destroyed in 1862 or slightly before.
EN: The door of the South side is
likely to have been destroyed during the works of 1882.
PT:
chamada a "Torre do Mar"
EN: In addition to
these towers there was another tower at the south entrance, called
the "Tower of the Sea".
