Close to the village of Crichton are the ruins of old lime kilns. Limestone has been and still is wrought
upon the Crichton estate. It is has always been used for building, and for several years, many hundred tons were annually driven to supply the immense demand that Edinburgh required. Times have changed, and so has the lime industry. Although there is still demand for lime for the purposes of manure, modern technology has made these kilns obsolete.
