FI: Jo tuhansia vuosia Rovaniemi on toiminut pysähdyspaikkana kalastajille, metsästäjille ja kauppamiehille. Sijainti kahden valtajoen yhtymäkohdassa teki siitä Pohjolan turkiskaupan luontaisen keskuksen. Joet toimivat kulkureitteinä; kesäisin veneille, talvisin hiihtäjille ja pororaidoille. Jo pronssikaudella Lapista oli vesiteitse kauppayhteydet Baltian maihin, ja sieltä aina välimerelle asti.
Rovaniemen markkinoilla on Suomessa legendaarinen maine. Niistä on kerrottu tarinoita sekä tehty joikuja, lauluja ja elokuvia. Ostajia ja myyjiä markkinoille saapui paitsi Lapista, myös eteläisestä Suomesta, Ruotsista, Norjasta, Venäjältä ja jopa Keski-Euroopasta.
Hurjimpaan aikaan 1800-luvun lopulla ja 1900-luvun alkuvuosikymmeninä meno markkinoilla oli kuin Villissä Lännessä. Syyt olivat pitkälti samat. Maanteiden rakentaminen ja ratayhteyden avaaminen helpottivat liikkumista. Metsäsavotat, uitto, turkismetsästys ja -kauppa sekä kultakuume toivat Lappiin uutta väkeä: työmiehiä, tukkijätkiä, metsästäjiä, kauppiaita ja kullankaivajia, mutta myös kulkumiehiä ja seikkailijoita. Enimmäkseen "kaukana kaikesta" eläville ihmisille markkinat tarjosivat kaupankäynnin lisäksi huvituksia, elämyksiä ja jännitystä.
Alkujaan markkinat pidettiin talvella, helmikuussa, ja ne sijoittuivat silloiselle pääkadulle, Maantiekadulle (nyk. Valtakatu). Katu kulki Kemijokea seuraillen kirkolta Lainaanrantaan ja sen varrelta löytyivät kaikki tärkeimmät rakennukset. Talonomistajat vuokrasivat kauppiaille myyntikojuja tien vieriltä.
Vuosina 1881-1959 markkinat pidettiin Vanhalla torilla. Se sijaitsee Lainaanrannassa (ent. Färinranta eli "Lauttaranta") lähellä Kemi- ja Ounasjoen risteyskohtaa. Ennen siltojen rakentamista sieltä kulkivat lautat joen yli Saarenkylän puolelle, ja isommat laivat ylös jokivarsiin. Lainaanranta oli aikoinaan Rovaniemen vilkkainta aluetta ja koko Lapin läänin tiheimmin asuttu alue. Nykyään Vanhatori on puistoaluetta leikkikenttineen ja kioskeineen.
Vuodesta 1960 alkaen markkinat siirtyivät kauemmas keskustasta, 4-tien toiselle puolelle uudelle Kauppatorille. Tori on rauhoittunut; vaikka markkinoita järjestetään nykyään kolmesti vuodessa, varsinaisten markkinoiden ulkopuolella ei kauppiaita juuri näy. Viime vuosina torin elämää on pyritty vilkastuttamaan erilaisilla yleisötapahtumilla.
EN: Thousands of years already Rovaniemi has been a stopping place for fishermen, hunters and hawkers on their way to Lapland. The location in the cross of two big rivers made it the most important center of fur trade in North. People were travelling along the waterways; by boats in summer time and skiing or driving reindeer on the ice in winter time. Along these routes, already in the Bronze Age, trading reached to Baltic and thence as far as the Mediterranean.
In Finland Rovaniemi markets have a legendary reputation. Several stories, songs and movies have been made of the Markets. The buyers and sellers were wandering to the Markets from all over the Lapland, but also from Southern Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, and Central Europe.
During the most boisterous times, in end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century the going in the Markets was like in the Wild Wild West. The reasons were quite the same. Building up the road network and opening the railway made it easier to travel. Hunting and trading of the furs, timber industry and the gold rush were bringing new people to Lapland; workers, fur hunters and traders, lumberjacks, gold diggers, but also tramps and adventurers. People were living most of the time "in Middle of Nowhere". In addition to the serious business the Market also offered them some fun, experiences and excitement.
Originally the Market was set up during February, by the street Maantiekatu (present Valtakatu). Maantiekatu used to be the main street of Rovaniemi. It was following the river between the church and Lainaanranta. All the most important buildings were found by the street. The house owners used to rent out little stalls for the hawkers.
1881-1959 the Market was concentrated in the Old Market Place, nearby the cross of the rivers in Lainaanranta district (then Färinranta, i.e. "Ferry bank"). Before the bridges were built, the ferries were transporting people and things over the river, and the bigger ships were sailing up the rivers. For a long time Lainaanranta used to be a lively area with the highest population density in whole Lapland. Nowadays Old Market Place is park area with playgrounds for children and a kiosk.
Since 1959 the Market was moved further away from the city center, to Kauppatori in the other side of the Highway 4. The life in the New Market Place has calmed down: except the actual Markets three times every year, it´s quiet there. Lately there has been different kind of happenings organized in the Market Place.
