"Hace falta mucha fantasía para soportar la realidad". Dice Esaú Acosta, uno de los cinco arquitectos del monumento del 11-M, que después dos años y medio de trabajo, se le ha quedado grabada esa frase. Es una de miles. Uno de aquellos mensajes escritos en varios idiomas en forma de suspiros que volaron como volutas los días después del 11-M. En Atocha, en El Pozo, en Santa Eugenia o en la calle Téllez. Frases que partían de sentimientos innumerables en un artículo y que definieron el vacío que invadió el país aquel segundo jueves de marzo de 2004.
Esas 191 personas que se llevaron la sinrazón por delante, esas frases, esos vacíos impuestos a la fuerza tendrán su lugar de homenaje en Atocha para siempre.
Una estructura de 11 metros se alza en una rotonda cerca de la estación de Atocha. Tiene dos capas, una, la exterior, está compuesta por bloques de vidrio macizo transparente, de 15 centímetros de espesor. Sus piezas irregulares, simulando las olas del mar, de ocho kilos de peso, se han ido colocando una a una, como lágrimas, en una iniciativa sin equivalente en España. Se sabe también que la otra capa, la interior, es una membrana de ETFE -una variante del teflón- donde están impresas esas frases, esos vacíos. Esta lámina está sujeta por presión de aire.
Se conoce también que la primera de las estructuras tendrá un peso de 140 toneladas y la otra de 50 kilos. Y aunque se sepa, muchos desconocen todavía que el verdadero monumento no está fuera, sino dentro de la estación de Atocha, en su vestíbulo principal. Es una sala de casi 500 m2 frente a los tornos de la entrada al metro, con las paredes revestidas de un velo azul -representando un cielo, tal vez-, donde la luz es la protagonista.

El elegido al principio tuvo que ser sustituido por uno más resistente, el borosilicato. Y más tarde vendría la construcción, pieza a pieza, un delicado proceso en el que colaboraron empresas de varios países, hasta de China.
