Geocache Description:

Battlehill Woods on the outskirts of Huntly. Take first Huntly exit off main A96 between Inverurie and Elgin. Small sign post for Battle hill woods. There is small carpark leaving nice walk in the woods.

Not much on the internet regarding the battle which occurred in these woods, all we have been able to find is that Robert Bruce, son of Robert The Bruce fell seriously ill at Inverurie and was taken to Strathbogie (Huntly) castle to recover. His brother Edward moved their army to the safer wooded lands of Slioch, south of Huntly, where they held a defensive camp. Thinking Bruce’s force could be weakened, John Comyn, Earl of Buchan, took the opportunity to gather an army and attack the encampment. An archery battle took place without either side gaining a decisive victory, Earl’s army withdrew. The Battle Hill at Huntly takes its name from this encounter which included Sir Adam de Gordon, who was later granted the lands of Strathbogie for his service at Slioch against the Comyn’s.
This is our first cache, of many we hope. Thought we would start in our home town of Huntly, Aberdeenshire.
The cache started off with a FTF goodie, Norniron geocoin(our first geocoin), a log book, pencil, Golden Camel, Spanner, toy aeroplane, key ring, Gold car and a compass. Hope you enjoy the walk in the woods.
