Rutkastes (Roach Tail) hill fort is located in Belava parish, near the road to Tirza and Lejasciems.

Rutkastes hill is a small, about 12 m high, rounded hill, enclosed by flat fields. Already from afar it can be seen as the highest place in the surrounding space. Flat area is almost round about 30 m on average with 1 m vertical curve.

About 4 m below the flat area around the hill passes blurred terrace. May suspect that hill ever been ploughed, although nobody can it remember. Through terrace there has been an accurate lane which is now almost overgrown.

Banks, ditches and the entrance does not exist. Ground consists of gravel, so in the hill fort sides appears big grabbed holes.

Hostels layer is around 0.25 m thick and contains residuals of non-turned vessels, charcoal and bones. They say that during digging there were found copper money pieces and human skulls. These data indicate that the hill once was used as a cemetery.

North from the hill is located a small swamp in the past been non-overgrown water. There are cornfields along foothill.

This small hill fort can be seen as example for really old fortified residence. It is so small that its protective role can not be concerned as serious.
