Solymár (literally falconer, and for local German minority it is called also to Schaumar) is a larger village, what situated in micro-region of Pilisvörösvár, in the Budapest agglomeration, in Pest county.
HISTORY OF THE CASTLE
The castle was built on Mátyás (Matthias) hill of Solymár - named after Hungarian golden age King Matthias - in 1455, however its origin is much older, as the head tower was built in on a Roman age foundation. Today the whole castle is waiting for visitors in renewed form.
Solymár mediaeval castle was raised by Lackfi István - faithful palatine of Anjou Louis I the Great, King of Hungary and Poland - for strengthening his power. Later it became Royal roperty.
From the beginning of the 15th century it was owned by Sigismund, the last Emperor of the House of Luxemburg, then from 1482 by King Matthias (also known as Matthias Corvinus), and the end of century by Vladislas II (also known as Ladislaus Jagiellon). Later it was possessed by the largest aristocratic families - Rozgonyi, Gara, Thurzó, - as it was the closest castle in distance to the royal seat of Buda.
The simple formed castle has served as the residence of its possessors rarely, primarily on occasion of huntings. Only a commander and a smaller guard stayed in it steadily.
Considerable development was made around 1500, when a tower was attached, the palace was extended and rebuilt with renaissance stonework. After 1541, when Buda fall onto Turkish hands, it was destroyed. It’s military role was taken by Turkish built Vörösvár castle. The stones from its ruins were carried away in the 18th century, when Solymár was resettled.
Its archaeological exploration started in 1929, while the restoration of present state was finishe in 2006…
The reconstruction works are on currently in the palace yard of the castle!

Take local blue BKV city buses number 64 and 164 from the Cool Valley (Hüvösvölgy) terminal, and coaches yellow bus, VOLÁNBUSZ from Árpád-híd terminal, a MÁV train from Budapest Western Railway Station (Nyugati pályaudvar), or by car, take Route 10.

If the gates are closed it is still possible to visit the castle on a bypass – go around the tower.
