Be careful. Near the bridge there are a house were active little
boys are living.
A bit about the history of the bridge:
The first bridge
The first railway bridge at this place was built in 1917 year when
the Russian Army built the narrow-gauge (750 mm) railway line
Ieriki-Gulbene. Special construction materials were brought by
railway from Gulbene. In the summer of 1917 Riga was occupied by
the German Kaiser's army who chased the Russian Army who was
running away back to Russia. At the end of September or early
October, it is not precisely known, the bridge was blasted.
The second bridge
Despite the German occupation, the bridge was being built again.
Peasants again sawed beams. When the bridge was ready, pilot drive
took place. The bridge cracked and the locomotive with tender
(coal-car) tumbled down. In this disaster the construction
engineer, the driver, his assistant, the stoker, and geodesist, who
stood below the bridge and measured the structural deflections,
were killed. The following day, with great difficulties the bodies
were pulled out from the scrap and were inhumed nearly in the right
bank of the Gauja.
Accidents cause – rotten construction materials taken from the
czarist Russian Army materials base.
The third (current) bridge
During World War II the bridge was hit again. Then it was
re-arranged again. The bridge was rebuilt in the middle of 1950,
resulting in its current appearance.
This bridge is no longer used for railway purposes since 1999 when
the railway line Ieriki-Gulbene was closed.
