The church is situated close to Little Totham Hall and surrounding farm buildings. It is a small building mainly 13th century, with many Norman features. The 16th century tower is part stone and finished in timber weather board with a pyramid roof.
In 1840, Charles Clark was tenant of the nearby Totham Hall, he was studying birth control (at the time a wicked thing to do) a bachelor who fervently believed his county and his country was overpopulated. The remedy was birth control. Queen Victoria was happily on the throne producing nine children. Clark dared to comment on the regular royal births and printed a revised version of the national anthem which runs:
‘God stop quick Vic. our Queen!
O! thwart our fruitful Queen –
God stop the Queen!’
He produced good verses too and wrote a lot on mid-Victorian Essex life. He died in 1840; Queen Victoria grandly reigned on.
