St John and St Giles, Gt Easton
The church of
St John and St Giles is early Norman,
but on the site of an earlier Saxon building. The building was
originally cruciform in shape, but the North and South trancepts
have long since disappeared. The noticeably thicker walls on the
Eastern half of the 12th century nave are a clear
indication that they originally carried a crossing
tower.
Have a look on the south wall of
the chancel where the remains of an unusually large scratch
(sun)dial can be seen. The centre hole and six of the left hand
segments are still traceable.
