This is a simple 2-part math problem to get you to the
cache.
I brewed a 5 gallon batch of saison-style beer a couple of months
ago and with proper aging, it turned out quite tasty!
Here's a quick rundown of the brewing day process:
- Assemble ingredients and equipment
- Boil brew water
- Add malt extract and/or grains, now you have wort!
- Add hops when required
- Cool wort after the boil
- Pour wort into fermentation bucket or carboy
- Pitch the yeast
- Put carboy in safe place to let it ferment
In 2-4 weeks, you will be rewarded with your own homemade brew that
you can then bottle or keg to share and enjoy!
The first part will be figuring out the
alcohol content of the homebrew using the original gravity and
final gravity readings.
For a given alcoholic beverage, there are two types of gravity
measurements, taken before and after fermentation:
Original gravity (OG), which is a measure of the specific
gravity of an unfermented beverage.
(OG is the "sugar before fermentation" measurement.)
Final gravity (FG), which is a measure of the specific
gravity of the fermented beverage.
(FG is the "sugar after fermentation" measurement.)
Typically, FG is measured only once fermentation is completely
finished - that is, all of the fermentable sugars have been turned
into ethanol.
The difference between OG and FG is a measure of the amount of
sugar consumed in the fermentation (the yeast are eating up the
sugars in the wort), and therefore it can be used as a rough,
indirect measurement of the alcohol in beer.
I took a couple of readings with my hydrometer to get the OG
and FG numbers.
OG of 1.056
FG of 1.012
Figure out the alcohol content (use average by volume or ABV)
for Answer A (Hint:

(If the Steubrew site is down, you can try this one,

( Thanks to Ranger Rog for the website info! )
For the second part, we'll figure out how
much alcohol is in the glass.
My neighbors like to come over and 'sample' the beer!
If they pour themselves a pint of the saison, how much alcohol (
in ounces, decimal form, don't round up!)
would be in the glass using the % from Answer
A ?
This will be Answer B.
N 45 10.741 + A (use in decimal
form, 8.6% = .086)
W 93 17.300 + B (use in decimal
form, .xxx)
