50 Jahre Verkehrshaus Schweiz Traditional Geocache

Erste Bestrebungen, ein Schweizer Verkehrsmuseum zu gründen, gab es im Jahr 1897 anlässlich des 50-Jahr-Jubiläums der Schweizer Eisenbahnen. In Ansätzen verwirklicht wurde die Idee jedoch erst im Rahmen der Landesausstellung von 1914, wo verschiedene Originalobjekte zur Eisenbahngeschichte gezeigt wurden. Die SBB eröffneten 1918 mit dem Grundstock der damals zusammengetragenen Sammlung das Schweizerische Eisenbahnmuseum in Zürich. Im historischen und personellen Umfeld der Landesausstellung von 1939 wurde die Idee eines den gesamten Verkehr umfassenden Museums wieder aufgegriffen und mündete 1942 in die Gründung des Vereins Verkehrshaus der Schweiz - der das Museum bis heute betreibt -, damals mit Sitz in Zürich. Nachdem dort kein geeignetes Gelände für das geplante Museum gefunden werden konnte, die Stadt Luzern dem Verein jedoch ein solches anbot, begann 1957 der Bau des Verkehrshauses auf dem 40 000 m² grossen Lidogelände unmittelbar am Vierwaldstättersee. Dem Verein Verkehrshaus der Schweiz gehörten damals neben SBB und PTT, Privatbahnen und Verkehrsorganisationen auch grosse Unternehmen aus Handel, Industrie und Tourismus an. Die thematische Ausrichtung des Verkehrshauses widerspiegelt demgemäss auch die Kommunikationsinteressen der Gründungspartner dieser Institution. Unterstützt wurde der Bau ausserdem durch das finanzielle Engagement des Bundes sowie der Stadt und des Kantons Luzern.
Das Verkehrshaus der Schweiz konnte nach zweijähriger Bauzeit am 1. Juli 1959 eröffnet werden, wurde schnell zum populärsten Museum der Schweiz und verzeichnete bis ins Jahr 2007 über 25 Millionen Besucherinnen und Besucher.

The first attempts to establish a Swiss transport museum took place in 1897 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Swiss railways. The idea only bore fruit at the time of the National Exhibition in 1914, at which various original objects relating to railway history were displayed. In 1918, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) opened the Swiss Railway Museum in Zurich with the basic stock of the collection assembled at the time. The idea of a museum devoted entirely to transport was taken up again in the historic and personnel environment of the 1939 National Exhibition and in 1942 found expression in the formation of the Swiss Museum of Transport Association - based at that time in Zurich - which still operates the museum to this day. Following the failure to find a suitable site there for the planned museum, the association was offered one by the city of Lucerne and construction of the Swiss Museum of Transport began in 1957 on the 40,000 m² lido site adjoining Lake Lucerne. At that time, the Swiss Museum of Transport Association was owned by the SBB, PTT, private railways and transport organisations together with major companies in the retail, industry and tourism sectors. Consequently, the thematic orientation of the Swiss Museum of Transport also reflects the communication interests of the founding partners. The construction was supported through the financial commitment of the Federal Government and the city and canton of Lucerne.
Following a two-year construction period, the Swiss Museum of Transport was able to open on 1 July 1959. It rapidly became the most popular museum in Switzerland, attracting more than 25 million visitors by 2007.
