A tricky hide in the wilderness of Carousel Park...
Carousel Park was the country home of Felix Dupont and his family until the late 1960’s. The estate was originally named “Carousel.” Felix had an in-ground pool behind the house, a kennel for his dogs next to it, and a stable for his horses behind the house.
While out of town on vacation with his wife, his kids threw a party. At some point during the party, a fire started inside the house. It spread rapidly, burning out the central area of the 7,000+ square foot house, all the way up through the roof. Rather than rebuild it, Felix opted to sell the property to New Castle County.
The first of the 6 land parcels that make up the park was sold to the county in 1970 for $10. Today, the 6 parcels total 216.6 acres, and their total value is currently $2,732,100. Ironically, one of the 6 parcels is actually owned by the State of Delaware - not by the county!
New Castle County wanted to repair the house, and build a community arts center there. Budget problems kept the plans from reaching completion. A few years later, due to safety concerns, the house was knocked down to fill in the basement area and the in-ground pool. Then topsoil was trucked in and spread over the area. Today, there is a small parking area and picnic tables at the site. As they say, “Ashes to ashes…”
You are looking for a cache container that looks suspiciously like a spice bottle, painted in camo colors. A pencil and log book are provided, along with a TB to get things rolling. There is room for small TBs, geocache pins and trail coins.
Free parking is available just off of Linden Hill Road and Skyline Drive, across from the Skyline Methodist Church.
The round trip hike for this cache is just 0.2 miles. A deer trail takes you within 10 feet of the cache. Depending on the season, the last 20-30 feet may require bushwhacking.
Of course, please rehide the cache where you found it – don’t make this easier for the next cacher!
