It is a historical stone quarry in a very beautiful area.
The Franconian Muschelkalk
The end-Permian mass extinction brought an end to the Paleozoic Era and marked the beginning of the Mesozoic Era that would last from 245-65 million years ago. This was the "Age of Dinosaurs".
The first period of the Mesozoic Era is the Triassic Period, which lasted from 245 to 202 million years ago.
The name Triassic comes from Germany where it was originally named the Trias in 1834 by Friedrich August Von Alberti (1795-1878) because it is represented by a three-part division of rock types in Germany. It is still called the Trias by many European geologists. The three distinctive formation consist of a succession of continental sandstones (Buntsandstein), peritidal carbonates and shales (Muschelkalk), and continental claystones and evaporites (Keuper). These turn out to be local rock units that cannot be applied globally.
The Triassic was a Hot House world, with no evidence of ice at the poles.
Pangea was fully assembled and remained so through the Triassic.
The Triassic was critical for Terrestrial life because all of the living dominant groups of tetrapods evolved by its end.
The Muschelkalk is restricted to the subsurface of Germany and adjacent regions as the low countries, the North Sea and parts of Silesia, Poland and Denmark. Outcrops are found in Thuringia, the Harz, Franconia, Hesse, Swabia, and the Saarland and the Alsace.
The Muschelkalk was deposited in a land-locked sea which, in the earlier part of its existence, had only imperfect communications with the more open waters of the Tethys Ocean to the south. The basin in which the Muschelkalk was deposited is called the Germanic Basin.

Am Ende des Permzeitalters gab es ein Massensterben, was das Ende des Paläozoikums besiegelte und den Beginn des Mesozoikums einleitete. Dieser Zeitraum ging von 245-65 Millionen Jahren vor unserer Zeitrechnung. Populistisch wird diese Ära gerne das "Dinosaurierzeitalter" genannt.
Die erste Phase des Mesozoikums - die von 245 bis 202 Mio Jahren dauerte - heisst dieTRIAS.
Der Name Trias wurde 1834 von Friedrich August Von Alberti (1795-1878) geprägt, da er der TRIAS drei verschiedene typische Formationen zuordnete. Die drei Schichten nannte er von unten nach oben - Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk und Keuper.
Die TRIAS zeichnete sich durch eine hohe globale Erwärmung aus. Eispole waren damals gänzlich unbekannt.
Es gab nur einen Kontinent - die sogenannte Pangaea. (Durch plattentektonische Vorgänge zerbrach Pangaea im Jura ; etwa 150 Nio vor unserer Zeit; unter Ausbildung der Paratethys im heutigen Mitteleuropa und Südeuropa vorerst in die Großkontinente Laurasia und Gondwana, welche später in der Kreidezeit; etwa vor 135 Mio; im Zuge der Spreizung des Atlantiks und der Umbildung der Tethys zum Indischen Ozean und Antarktischen Ozean in die uns heute bekannten Kontinente zerfielen.)
Die TRIAS war vor allem von nicht-terrestrischen Arten geprägt, da die damals dominanten Arten von Vierbeinern am Ende der TRIAS weitestgehenst ausstarben.
Der Muschelkalk liegt normalerweise tief unter uns im Gestein und ist auf tiefliegende Landschaften beschränkt. So finden wir ihn unter der Nordsee, in Teilen von Schlesien, Polen und Dänemark. Oberflächenvorkommen zeigen sich in Thüringen, dem Harz, Franken, Hessen, Schwaben, dem Elsass und dem Saarland. Der Muschelkalk entstand in einem Binnenmeer, das nur sehr temporär Zugang zum Urmeer Thetys hatte. Man nennt dieses Muschelkalkmeer von damals auch das Deutsche Becken.
Mit diesem Cache versuchen wir dem werten Finder einen Einblick in das Erdzeitalter TRIAS insbesondere dem Muschelkalk zu geben.
Gut - Eure Aufgabe ist es:
1. Bitte fertigt eine Skizze vom Muschelkalk an, wie er gebrochen in dem Steinbruch liegt. Noch besser, falls Ihr ein Fossiliendetail findet, zeichnet dies und ladet ein Foto hoch.
2. Macht ein Foto von Euch an einer typischen erkennbaren Stelle mit den Quaderkalken im Hintergrund und ladet das auch hoch.
