Although accessable from Knap Down, the demanding coast path
from Combe Martin via Little Hangman is far more rewarding and
strongly recommended. Using this route, a climb of 318m (more than
1000ft) makes this a cache for the relatively fit.
Parking is available at N51° 12.415 W004° 02.240 - you will need
at least 3 hours. From the car park, follow the coast path over
Lester Point and then round and up to Little Hangman – an
excellent place to consume any provisions packed for the
journey.
The remaining climb to Great Hangman is a much more steady
affair with improving views of the North Devon coast and, on a
clear day, South Wales.
At the summit your GPS will be telling you to go north - ignore
it. The only way to the cache is to continue along the coast path
to Blackstone Cross, N 51° 12.709 W 004° 00.012 (not the cache
co-ordinates), and then follow the GPS to the cache co-ordinates N
51° 12.967 W 004° 00.146.
The cache, a ½ litre clear container with a red lid, is located
on the left of a wide grass path, away from the cliff edge, and is
a relatively easy find. The cliff to the right is the highest in
England and should be treated with respect. Near the cache is the
entrance to one of many mine shafts in the area. To the best of our
knowledge these are all capped but treat with caution.
Almost entirely downhill, the return journey will take a
fraction of the time and provides an ideal opportunity to unwind
and appreciate the area.
