The history of the Remete-chapel
Sources mention that Szekszárd had a shrine, a place of pilgrimage, as early as the 11th century. This was destroyed during the Ottoman occupation (1541-1686).
During the plague epidemic of 1739 people of Szekszárd vowed to erect a chapel to honor Virgin Mary if the plague stops. There used to be a chapel of St. Anne at the edge of the city, by this time, in very bad shape. Instead of building a new one, this old chapel was rebuilt, extended and dedicated to Mary.
The chapel was consecrated only in 1757. Soon it became a place of pilgrimage even for people for far away. The chapel was taken care of by a Franciscan monk who lived in a hermit's shelter nearby. Probably this is where the popular name: Hermit Chapel comes from.
The main altar is decorated by the replica of the Mary statue of Mariazell. It was brought here at the beginning of the 1800s, by the judge of the city from the cholera hospital of Vienna. Next to it stands the statues of St. Peter and Paul. The other altar is a richly decorated, huge, rococo structure. Its sizes reveals that it was not made for this interior. The altar picture is a high quality depiction of the small Mary and St. Anne in classical style.

The Calvary
The Calvary is located on the hillside next to the chapel leading up to the statue of the Suffering Christ. The linden trees lining the right side of the Calvary are the oldest linden in Szekszárd, can already be seen on engravings from 1860.

The Hermit Spring (Remete-forrás)
is situated under the Calvary, about 100 m to the west from the iron gate of the chapel. It is considered to have healing power.

The tradition of the patronal festival is still living. It is held on September 8th every year. In 1865, composer Ferenc Liszt participated in the festivities.
