Street series---Veith Street is part of a series depicting the origin of street names in HalifaxCity.
The American Revolutionary War was international. The American side was supported by France,Spain and the Netherlands, while the British Crown employed auxiliary troops drawn from several German states......One unit employed in the British service was the Regiment von Seitz......A lieutenant in this regiment was Adolphus Christoph Vieth (1754-1835). While serving in the Halifax garrison, Veith fell in love with the daughter of a local German. He was arrested and demoted when he married Anna Dorothea Brehm without Seitz's permission.
In Halifax, Veith contributed much to the community as the moving spirit in the formation of a German Society in 1786 and as an active member of the Masonic lodge and St. George's church. He was the commissariat officer, a captain in the militia and a landowner in the north end of town. In March 1790, he became the first sergeant-at-arms in the Nova Scotia Assembly. ( Terrance M Punch) Veith street is named in his honor.
