Cette cache vous fera connaître Saint Vidian, le Saint Patron de Martres-Tolosane, petite cité de caractère surtout renommée pour sa faïencerie.
Non loin du centre ville, vous trouverez la Fontaine de St Vidian au fond d’un parc agréable où les familles peuvent pique niquer, faire des barbecues et même pêcher au bord du lac de St Vidian. Il y a aussi des jeux pour enfants.
C'est au pied de la cité Angonia que se déroula, selon la légende, une bataille où s'affrontèrent chrétiens contre sarrasins. Vidian, chef des troupes chrétiennes, y perdit la vie ainsi que plusieurs de ses compagnons. En souvenir de ces martyrs, le nom de Martres-Tolosane (les martyrs toulousains) succéda à celui d' Angonia.
La « Bataille de la Saint Vidian » a lieu chaque année à Martres-Tolosane le dimanche de la Trinité (le dimanche après Pentecôte), et ce, depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle : une messe spéciale est célébrée dans l’église gothique de St Vidian, avec la participation de la fanfare et de tous les acteurs de la bataille (cavaliers et fantassins) en habits d’époque (chrétiens et Sarrasins). A la fin de la célébration, la procession se dirige vers la Fontaine de St Vidian, suivie par de très nombreux spectateurs ! Au lieu-dit ‘Campestre’, la fameuse bataille a lieu, mais rassurez vous, elle ne fait maintenant ni morts, ni blessés…. C’est au contraire l’occasion d’un grand moment de convivialité !
Selon la légende, St Vidian aurait lancé son épée alors qu'il succombait. En se plantant, celle-ci aurait fait jaillir de l'eau, créant ainsi la source portant son nom.
Une autre légende veut que St Vidian, blessé à la tête, soit venu laver ses plaies à cette source. Les petits cailloux rouge brun qui sont sur le radier seraient encore teintés de son sang.
L’eau de la fontaine était réputée pour ses propriétés bénéfiques et nombreux étaient ceux qui venaient en faire régulièrement provision. Mais aujourd'hui, elle est déclarée "non potable"....
L’eau se déverse ensuite dans la Garonne par un système de bassins.
A côté de la source se trouve une croix en fer forgé du XVIIIe siècle. La tradition orale lui assigne un rôle de protection divine de la source.

This cache will make you discover Saint-Vidian, the Patron Saint of Martres-Tolosane, small town of character, mainly famous for its earthenware.
Not far from the town centre, you will find St Vidian’s Fountain at the end of a nice park where families can have a picnic, a barbecue and even fish by the Lake of St Vidian. Games are also there for children.
According to the legend, a battle took place at the bottom of Angonia: Christians against Saracens. Vidian, the leader of christian troups, lost his life there together with several of his companions. In memory of those martyrs, the name of Martres-Tolosane (Toulouse martyrs) replaced that of Angonia.
The “Battle of St Vidian” takes place every year in Martres-Tolosane on Trinity Sunday (Sunday after Whitsun). And this has happened since the middle of the XIX century: a special mass is celebrated in Gothic St Vidian’s Church, with the participation of the brass band and all of the actors of the battle (cavalrymen and infantrymen) dressed in period costumes (Christians and Saracens). At the end of the celebration, the procession walks to St Vidian’s Fountain, followed by a great number of spectators! The famous battle takes place at the place known as “Campestre”, but don’t worry, there are no casualties nowadays!..On the contrary, it is the occasion of a great moment of conviviality!
According to the legend, St Vidian would have thrown his sword as he was dying. By sticking into the ground, it would have made water gush out, thus creating the spring named after him.
Another legend says that St Vidian, his head injured, came to wash his wound at this spring. The small dark red stones that are on the sill would still be stained with his blood.
The water of the fountain was famous for its beneficial properties and many people came there regularly to take some.
But today, it is declared " non drinkable" ....
Then, the water flows into the Garonne by a system of pools.
Next to the spring, there is a wrought iron cross dating back to the XVIII century. Oral tradition gives it a part of divine protection of the spring.
