Bayers Road is part of a series showing the origin street names in Halifax.
" This road began in 1766 as a convenient track to the Dutch [for "Deutsh" or German] settlement, today's Dutch Village Road, originally the town's outermost suburb The name itself, like those of many of the older streets evolve because the street ran by the farm of the Bayer family. On 7 October 1763, George Bayer , a prosperous baker from Frankfurt am Main, Germany purchased the land granted a few months earlier to Colonel Frederick Hamilton. The farm was bounded on the east by Windsor road [today's Windsor Street]where the original 1765 homestead stood until it burnt in 1867 and on the south by Bayers Road. ........The settlement at Dutch Village developed early in the history of Halifax, initially accessed by a rather roundabout route. In September 1766, the residents petitioned for a more direct acces; as a result the missing link was opened up through the forest..........large fields remained well into the twentieth century, but with the intensive commercial and residential development of the western half of the peninsula after the second World War, Bayers Road lost it rural character. Today Bayers Road is the principal western entrance to the city, and a main artery for commuters crossing the city to Bicentential Drive and points west...." William D. Naftel--- Halifax Street Names
