This cache has been archived.

ecrane: I guess that 14 years is a good run. I hate to see this one go, but it's TFSN. Warm thanks this Independence Day to all who visited.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the corner of 8th and J (the posted coordinates), but it is within two miles. It's in the land of N 38° 3X.XXX W 121° 4X.XXX.

Step right up! There's a seat open! But to "cache in" on this mystery, you'll have to answer a few poker and statistics questions about the five-card poker hand of--you guessed it--8888J. House rules are that Aces are always high. The deck is a standard 52-card deck.

General
A. How many unique five-card hands of 8888J can be dealt? (order doesn't matter) Your result is A.

Texas Hold 'Em
B. In a Texas Hold 'Em showdown, Player 1 holds a pair of Aces, Player 2 holds a pair of Jacks, and Player 3 holds Ace-King. The community cards, or "board cards," are--you guessed it--8888J. What is the order of the hands? Select from the 10 choices below. The number to the left of the correct answer is B.
2215-All three players tie.
2565-Player 1 has the best hand, then Player 2, then Player 3.
2893-Player 2 has the best hand, then Player 1, then Player 3.
3227-Player 1 has the best hand, then Player 3, then Player 2.
3576-Player 2 has the best hand, then Player 3, then Player 1.
3900-Players 1 and 2 tie with the best hand, then Player 3.
4253-Players 2 and 3 tie with the best hand, then Player 1.
4680-Players 1 and 3 tie with the best hand, then Player 2.
4942-Player 1 has the best hand, and Players 2 and 3 tie.
5292-Player 2 has the best hand, and Players 1 and 3 tie.

Six-Card Stud
C. How many unique six-card hands can be dealt where the best five-card hand is 8888J? (order doesn't matter)

Lowball or Razz Stud (In Five-Card Razz Stud, the lowest-ranking five-card poker hand wins. Another difference from Texas Hold 'Em is that there are no shared cards across multiple players.)
D. What is the worst hand that would still beat 8888J in a head-to-head Razz showdown? Add up the ranks of the five cards for your answer to D. (For purposes of D and E, Aces are still high, but count any Aces as 1 for adding the ranks.)
E. What is the best hand that 8888J would still beat in a head-to-head Razz showdown? Add up the ranks of the five cards for your answer to E. (For purposes of D and E, Aces are still high, but count any Aces as 1 for adding the ranks.)

North X.XXX: (C * D) - 400. Divide by 1000.
West X.XXX: (A * E) + B. Divide by 1000.
