Geocache Description:

Io - one of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. Approaching from Old Mineral Springs Road will reward you with a visit to some scenic falls and a hike through some varied and beautiful woods in Black Rock Forest.

Jupiter has 63 known moons. Io is one of the four largest moons, which were discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610. Io is slightly larger than Earth’s moon.

It is said that Io’s surface looks a bit like a pizza covered in cheese and olives. This is in a large part due to the extreme tidal forces experienced by the moon, which causes much of its subsurface crust to remain as a liquid.

Despite the fact that Io is one of only three moons in our solar system with an atmosphere, it is believed to be mostly made of sulfur compounds. Not someplace I’m in a hurry to visit.

For more information on Io check out: NASA's Solar System Exploration Page for Io

As you hike in from Mineral Springs, depending on the season, you might see a small boulder perched on a rock slab near the cache. For me that represented Io.

If you’ve never hiked and cached Black Rock Forest before, here is another reason to visit and see what this area has to offer. If you’ve been there, done that, then here is a reason to visit again. Parking for this cache is the same as for brian b’s Jupiter’s Boulder cache (GCEA67). I too have had no issues with parking.

This cache is one of a set of caches I am placing for my 1st year anniversary of Geocaching. I've enjoyed my experiences over the past year and met many great and friendly people along the way. These caches are my way of saying thank you.

You are looking for a 2l Lock & Lock that is not hidden in the most obvious spot at GZ.
