This is a 2 part multi-cache located in Veteran's Memorial Park in Hillburn, NY. The first container is a micro, and the final is a small lock-n-lock with a logbook and small trade items.
*This was a 3 stage multi, but stage 1 has gone missing twice, so I have decided not to replace it.
The park has many benches, a lake with a fountain, a gazebo, a Veteran's Memorial, and a stone monument with a carving and description of the Snow House, which was built by William Snow, one of the founding fathers of the Village of Hillburn. Be sure to take a look at the Snow House Historical Marker, which is located 40 feet from the original stage one (marked as a waypoint).
The first stage of the cache contains coordinates for the final. Both stages of the Multicache are located in the Veteran's Memorial Park.
This cache is a frog-themed cache, starting out with frog stickers and little plastic frogs as trade items. I have wanted to place a frog-themed cache for some time, but couldn't find a good place for it until now. The first time I visited this park, it was a warm and sunny summer day. When I walked up to the edge of the pond, the surface of the water erupted with jumping frogs! There must have been thousands of them living in the water. When I brought my family to see the park, it was later in the day and just getting dark. We only saw one frog and they didn't believe me that the pond was full of them, but they are there!
Please do not disturb the rock wall when searching for the cache, and do not search for this cache after dark.
The History of the Village of Hillburn
In August 1872, George Coffin, George Church and W.W. Snow, managers of the Ramapo Wheel and Foundry Company, set out to establish a village for the foundry workers. Land was purchased, streets were laid out, houses were erected. Workers were encouraged and assisted to purchase lots and build houses on them. This village was called Woodburn, because of the near proximity of woods and water. In 1882, when applying for a post office, it was found there was another Woodburn and the name was changed to Hillburn, which still maintains the characteristics of its name. It was here in Hillburn that W.W. Snow chose to build a residence for himself, where he remained until his death.
The Ramapo Iron Works was incorporated in 1881. They saved money by making their own castings instead of buying from shops in New York City and Jersey City. Twenty acres of land were purchased from Mr. Suffern. A soft iron foundry was built to manufacture the castings, along with 20 houses and a store, which furnished the people in the village with all the supplies they needed. This was the beginning of the Village of Hillburn. At the time, it was larger and had a greater population than Suffern. Hillburn was the first of the of the two to be incorporated as a village on July 24, 1893.
