Foi devido à construção do antigo matadouro e
porque um comerciante de gado temia a sua concorrência, que o
Rossio das Caldas da Rainha se transformou numa Praça em 1883, com
a construção do tabuleiro em calçada.
Quando este foi construído um dos grandes
latifundiários da região, Faustino da Gama, sentiu-se ameaçado no
seu negócio de criação de gado. O proprietário da Várzea da Rainha,
em Óbidos, temia que fosse prejudicado na venda de carne durante o
Verão, quando a vila dobrava a sua população por causa dos
veraneantes.
Faustino da Gama propôs a Rodrigo Berquó que pagaria a construção
da Praça em troca do exclusivo do monopólio da venda da carne nas
Caldas. Mas a obra terá ficado mais cara do que ele previa.
O Rossio tinha sido criado pela rainha Maria da Vitória, esposa de
D. João V, em 1750, na altura em que mandou construir os Paços do
Concelho, em 1750. Segundo Hermínio de Oliveira, nessa altura a
principal preocupação da Câmara Municipal era gerir as sombras do
mercado que existia na zona onde agora é a rua de Camões. Este
local tinha muitos plátanos e os lugares à sombra eram da
responsabilidade da autarquia.
A meio do então Rossio, onde já se faziam algumas vendas, existia
a capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e mais acima um cemitério.
Esta foi deitada abaixo para a colocação do tabuleiro e os caixões
transladados para outro cemitério.
Ao longo dos anos a Praça já teve o nome de Maria Pia e depois da
República. Apesar de nada ter sido alterado na Praça em si, à sua
volta houve várias alterações e até foram construídos prédios de
vários andares.
Mesmo assim esta continua a ter um encanto pessoal. É das mais bem
desenhadas Praças, integrada no espaço que ocupa. O autor do
projecto foi Celestiano Rosa. O engenheiro que era natural da
Amoreira, de Óbidos, foi também o autor da Praça 5 de Outubro e do
Teatro Pinheiro Chagas.

Caldas da Rainha transformed into a Square in 1883, with the

now is the street of Camões. This place had many sycamore trees and
places with shade were responsibility of the autarchy.
At the middle of the commons, where already some sales became,
existed the chapel of Ours higher up Lady of the Rosary and a
cemetary. This was lying below for the rank of the tray and the
coffins transladados for another cemetary.
Throughout the years the Square already had the name of Maria
Pia and after República. Although nothing to have been modified in
the Square in itself, to its return it had some alterations and
until building of some floors had been constructed.

The author of projecto was Celestiano Rosa. The engineer who was
natural of the Amoreira, Óbidos, was also the author of Praça 5 de
Outubro and the Teatro Pinheiro Chagas.
