The Cedars Lighthouse Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Red Witch: Apparently renovations done to the LH in 2020 resulted in the removal of the info needed to determine the co-ordinates. In addition the actual cache hiding place has collapsed and there is no sign of the cache container so obviously no one has been there since Pikpik more than a year ago. Thanks to all the cachers who played along with this cache and enjoyed visiting the Cedars Lighthouse over the past 14 years.

Geocache Description:

ONE IN A SERIES OF LIGHTHOUSE CACHES.
For a comprehensive history of this and all LHs in NB pick up a copy of the book
'Lighthouses of New Brunswick: Past & Present'.

Welcome to “my” lighthouse. The Cedars, located in Long Reach on the Kingston Peninsula, is one of 11 remaining lighthouses on the St John River and the one that got me involved in lighthouse preservation back in 1996 when the light was decommissioned. It took 9 years of patience and perseverance but this lighthouse was FINALLY turned over to a local heritage group in 2005. Sadly, very little has been done to promote or preserve the LH since then so it has fallen into a state of disrepair.

In 2008 a .17 mile path was opened from Rte 845 to the lighthouse making the lighthouse accessible to the public for the first time ever. The path follows the 15’ wide original right of way. Along the path you will see a number of massive old maple trees used in the country to mark property lines and the large boulders that would have been dumped when the fields were originally cleared for farming. The path itself has a number of small stumps and snags so be very careful of your footing, this is NOT a safe trail to attempt at night. The posted co-ordinates will take you to the lighthouse where you will have to solve an easy puzzle to get the co-ords to the cache itself. Take a photo of yourself in front of this historic lighthouse while you are there to share with fellow geocachers.
Do NOT attempt to drive to the posted co-ords, you will be trespassing on private property if you go anywhere except along the established path. Use the trailhead co-ords; the trail starts across from the church hall and is marked with a sign except during the winter months.

On the door of the lighthouse is a metal sign, use it to solve the following equation for the cache.
45° 28. ABC
66° 04. DEF

A= the sixth number in the bottom row
B= the fifth number in the bottom row
C= the number of letters in the top row
D= the sum of all the numbers in the top row
E= the ninth number in the bottom row
F= the seventh number in the bottom row

The cache is a small (sort of mid way between a small and a micro) camo’d container with only a log sheet; you will need your own writing instrument and there is no room for traders. It is NOT winter friendly!!!! Please do not attempt to remove the cache if it is frozen in place. I live very close by and will be able to check the cache often so feel free to use as much space as you would like on the log sheet.

AS ALWAYS, PLEASE LEAVE THE CACHE AS WELL OR BETTER HIDDEN THAN YOU FOUND IT!

HISTORY
The Cedars lighthouse was built in 1904 during the heyday of the riverboat era. A large hotel of the same name was opened nearby in 1894 and a provincial wharf (constructed of wood not concrete like the federal wharves) was built in 1908. The Cedars therefore became a bustling stop for the boats with the lighthouse guiding them in. Passengers disembarked for a day, a week or a season’s stay at the hotel and the locals loaded their goods onto the boats to sell in the city.
The first 6 lighthouses along the river were built in 1869 and as late as 1947 there were as many as 21 lighthouses operating on the St John River and its tributaries. Today there are only 11 remaining (Swift Point succumbed to arson June 14, 2017) and less than half of them are still operational.

June 2017: Sometime since my last visit someone tried to force the hiding spot and damaged it... PLEASE be careful when removing the cache. If you just take the time to look at the situation you will see that there is a way to remove it without trying to make the opening larger!!
