Pilot Peak Lookout is manned by Jim, part of a husband/wife team
who have been manning lookouts for three years. The fires of 2007
burned the north slope of Pilot Peak and Jim was evacuated and
finished out the season at other lookouts.
Black clouds of flying ants are everywhere at this elevation.
You'll need an ATV or motorcyle to reach this lookout. There are
several recent mudslides blocking the road to the lookout. If/when
the road is repaired, you may be able to drive a high clearance
vehicle to the top.
A great source of information about fire lookouts in the Payette
National Forest is the "Points of Prominence" book by Richard H.
Holm Jr.
