A combination of driving and hiking to an old abandoned lookout.
All lookouts have some unique qualities and this is no exception. Most lookouts are either being utilized today or have been torn down for liability purposes. This lookout is a rare find in that it is not being used and it still remains. In fact, there is talk (and some action) to restore this and add it to the Forest Service rental program.
Built in 1942, this L-4 cabin is built on a rock outcropping. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it is still in good shape and that I could walk around on it. The cabin is accessible but in a state of repair by various volunteers.
Views include the Crater Lake rim. To the south is the Rogue National Forest and the river by the same name. To the north is the North Umpqua river drainage.
This lookout was not easy to figure out how to get to. All three maps showed a trail from Three Lakes campground. That trail has not been used in a few years. There is, however, a road to the west that goes northward toward the butte. That road is for high clearance vehicles. Should you choose to hike from there, it is approximately 2 miles to the top. If you have a high clearance vehicle, you will find a newer trailhead off of this road with a 3/4 mile hike to the top.
