Geocache Description:

A ten mile drive on a good gravel road and a short hike to a lookout perched on a rock at 5360'.

The Umpqua National Forest has a wide variety of lookouts or former lookout sites. This one is special in its own way. With views of the upper North Umpqua drainage to the south, east and west and views of the upper Willamette drainage to the north, Illahee Rock looms over the Boulder Creek Wilderness. The remains of the 1996 Spring Mountain fire are evident in the area.

This is a 20' treated timber L-4 tower built in 1956. There is a nearby cupola cabin that was built in 1925. This lookout is on the National Historic Lookout Register. Lisa is the lookout and is very informative and helpful.

To get there, turn north on Illahee Rd #4760 just east of the Dry creek store. Follow it north 10 miles. There is a good 1/2 mile trail that approaches from the east. My maps showed an old original trail from the west but it is quite overgrown.
