Daugavpils is Latvia’s second largest city (116 000 inhabitants),
and is situated about 230 km south-east of Riga, along the
Lithuanian and Belarusian borders. But it wasn`t represented by any
cache till year 2008. So ..we`ve decided to resolve this ambiguity!
To get to this side of fortress you can through one of the 4 gates
- the Mihailovsky gates. But in weekends you probably will need to
pay entrance fee.
The pearl of the town is Dinaburg fortress that is historical and
architectural monument. This is the only fortress in Baltic States
that was built in the 19th century and remained till nowadays
without fundamental changes. During the excursion you can view the
buildings of Russian classicism: commandant building, hospitals,
caserns, you can walk in dungeons and climb up to the fortress’s
dams, as well as to see the park and cannons. You will have the
opportunity to feel a breath of distant past.
Planning of the fortress began in 1772 by decree of Tsar Alexander
I of Russia. In the year 1810 it was decided to rebuild the small
Dinaburg Fortress into a first-class fortress with a defensive
belt. Nevertheless, till the Napoleon invasion just temporary
fortifications were completed. By the end of the war, the wooden
constructions burned down, the wooden fortifications were severely
damaged. Reconstruction was continued in 1813. The fortress was
consecrated in 1833, but the construction works continued till the
year 1878. Later on the fortress lost its strategic significance
and served just as an armory, food storage place and the
prison.
