Geocache Description:

ENG: About 8900 to 7600 years ago water covered the entrie present 3 to 7 km wide coastline. The dominant southwest, west winds as well as the sea current and waves began to form sand and gravel drifts. As a result a more than 40km long and 200 to 300m wide flat was formed.Gradually agglomerating sand drifts the flat rose above the sea level. It's dry sand flowing towards the coast formed a long island parallel to the sea coastline with a lagoon between the sea and the island. The Strait of Roja connected the narrowLittorine sea lagoon and its numerous small river estuaries with the open sea. The humis atlantic climate facilitated the development of rich and diverse flora in the lagoon, especially marked between the years 6500 and 5000. Grass blog and damp meadows started to form along shores ofthe lagoon. Later the sea level sank by 1 to 1.5 metres dividing the lagoon into 2 to 6km long and shallow frshwater lakes. The three bigest of them were lakes Vidale, Melnsils and Purciems. About 4400 years ago a permanent Neolithic base settlement was built on the banks of Lake Purciems with several seasonal cultic settlements. One of them was situated next to the White Dune. The sand outcorps of the White Dune are the result of human activity. The present Pilsupe River serves as a watercourse to the sea made about 150 years ago to drain the shallow Lake Purciems for agricultural needs.
