Poohsticks on Speed Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Kitey: Sadly the cache seems to have disappeared, is rarely attempted and I no longer work in the area to maintain. So reluctantly archiving and area opened up for new challenges.

Geocache Description:

A short, but fun Multi-Cache set by the Grand Union Canal in Bradwell, Milton Keynes.

The Co-ordinates above are for the suggested Car Park, which is close to the Canal in Nightingale Cresent, Bradwell. Nearby is Bradwell Windmill and the Colley’s Mill [GCRFKN] cache, why not do both caches when you are in the area. Take note that this cache is near deep water and involves a water based event, so please take care with Children and Dogs. Poohsticks is a game first mentioned as being played by Winnie-the-Pooh and friends in the book “The House at Pooh Corner” by A. A. Milne. Invented by Pooh, it is an extremely simple game, played on a bridge over a river. Each participant drops a stick on the upstream side of the bridge; the player whose stick first appears on the other side is the winner. There is also a World Poohsticks Championships which takes place annually at Day's Lock on the River Thames near Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England. The event was started in 1983 as a fund-raising event for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. You will get the chance to play a slightly modified version of this game doing this cache, where you will race Poohsticks down some rapids and time their progress. Now to the Cache : Go to N52 03 729 W000 47 510 on the north side of the Canal and answer these two questions : When was the Bridge built? This is ABCD. How many letters in the Designers first name? This is E. Now proceed to the Rapids at N52 03 684 W000 47 620. This is actually the spillway for the Canal overflow and it is down there you will be playing Poohsticks. You will need to time how long it takes the stick to get from the top to the bottom, specifically from when it crosses the lip at the top to when it enters the pool at the bottom. This time in whole seconds is F. There are not too many sticks in the immediate vicinity – so you may like to bring your own. Also a stopwatch may come in handy. To ensure you get the same result as me when setting this cache, I used sticks about 10” (250mm) long, ¾” (20mm) diameter and with no more than a 10 degree kink. It’s a good idea to do several runs and average the results. You can do all of the Poohsticks racing without leaving the towpath. If you are doing this in a group, let me know who won the Poohsticks races. Now some simple Mathematics : G = F – A H = B – A – D J = G – D K = G + A + D L = E – D M = A + D The final cache location can then be found a short walk down the towpath at : North JM 0L GAE West 000 EH KLK You are looking for a 450ml Clip-Lock box. Good hunting. Joint First to Find Honours to Norfolk12 and MK Rambling Rose
