“INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST”
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries
built by Hoosier Pioneers or other historic sites. In four years,
the quest has grown to over six hundred caches hidden in Indiana,
Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario and the hiders have grown to over
thirty cacher teams. Over 1,000 cacher accounts
had logged over 25,000 finds when we quit
counting.
Dow and Walter
Patterson
On the last day of December, 1904, two young
boys decided to go ice skating with some friends at Town Lake. Dow
and Walter Patterson, sons of William A. Patterson (founder of
Akron Bank) headed off for what was supposed to be a fun-filled
day. After enjoying the morning with their friends, and as they
were preparing to leave the lake and head for home, the unthinkable
happened. Both brothers unknowingly walked onto a patch of thin
ice, and fell beneath the icy waters. Although their friends tried
desperately to save them, both boys slipped beneath the ice and
perished. The following poem, composed by Mrs. Ethel Cook Barrett
was read at their funeral:
TWO LITTLE BOYS IN HEAVEN
Oh! What do you think the angels
say? Said the children up in heaven: There's two dear little boys
coming home today. Just a while ago they flew away from the earth
we used to live in. Let's go and open the pearly gates of joys.
Open them wide for the new little boys, said the children up in
heaven. God wanted them here, where His little ones meet, said the
children up in heaven. They will lay with us in the golden street!
They had grown too fair, they had grown too sweet, for the earth we
used to live in. They need the sunshine, these dear little boys,
that glide this side of the gates of joys, said the children in
heaven. So the King called down from the angel's dome, said the
children up in heaven; My little darlings arise and come to the
place prepared in thy Father's home, to the home my children live
in. Let us go and watch at the gates of joys; Ready to welcome the
new little boys, said the children up in heaven. Far down to the
earth do you hear them weep? Said the children up in heaven; For
the little boys that have gone to sleep; The shadows fall and the
night clouds sweep, o'er the earth we used to live in. Oh! We go
and open the gates of joys. Oh! Why do they weep for their dear
little boys, said the children up in heaven. Fly with them quick,
O, angels dear, said the children up in heaven; See they are
coming! Look there! Look there! As the Jasper light on their sunny
hair. Where the veiling clouds are riven! Oh! Hush, hush , hush,
all the swift wings furl! For the King himself at the gates of
pearl, is taking both their dear little hands, and leading them
into the heavenly land.

Sgt. Nick Patterson, 82nd Airborne
Division
Sgt. Nick Patterson died on September 10, 2007 in Iraq when his
5-ton cargo truck veered off a highway overpass in western Baghdad.
He was a part of the 82nd Airborne Division and was returning from
a early morning raid. Six others also died in the crash. He was 24
years old. His widow created a "Field of Honor" at the Akron
Elementary School to remember him and others who have fought and
those who have died while serving our country. Although the flags
will soon be removed for 2008, the family hopes to make it a yearly
tradition around the week of July 4th.
