About an inch in length, the horse fly lives near streams, swamps and marshes. Unlike other flies, it does not make any noise when it flies, so it is able to land on large animals without their noticing. The female bites those animals to suck their blood, which she needs to lay eggs. The male eats fruit and juices from flowers.
