Marmelar     Marmelar

         Marmelar é uma pequena povoação alentejana bem perto da Serra de Portel. Esta pequena aldeia é tão antiga quanto a sua carta de Foral dada a Marmelar por D. Sancho I no dia 1 de Julho 1194 e mais tarde confirmado por D. Afonso II em 1219.
         O principal monumento de Marmelar é uma pequena igreja de construção muito curiosa e plena de interesse. Não existe qualquer referência acerca da época em que foi erigida da sua origem, muito embora apesar de existirem alguns acrescentos após a sua construção, tudo indica que não seja posterior ao século XVI.
         O seu exterior é especialmente caracterizado pelos contrafortes cilíndricos adelgaçando-se na parte superior para terminar em pináculos em forma de cone truncado.
         O seu interior, de uma só nave, tem uma abóbada de aresta com três tramos onde, no fecho de cada um deles existe um medalhão com um desenho diferente tendo o do meio a cruz de Cristo. Cada uma destas arestas termina por misulas também com figuras diferentes, cortadas em pedra.
         No altar-mor encontra-se a imagem de Santa Brígida, a padroeira de Marmelar. Nos dois altares laterais, sob a forma de consolas, vêem-se Nossa Senhora do Rosário e Nossa Senhora das Neves.
         Sendo, a igreja de Marmelar, um bom exemplo dos frescos do Alentejo, é sem dúvida merecedora de uma visita um pouco mais atenta.		              Marmelar is a small village from Alentejo near the Portel Sierra. This small village is as old as its letter of the Act given by D. Sancho I on July 1, 1194 and later confirmed by D. Afonso II in 1219.
         The main monument of Marmelar is a small church with a peculiar construction and full of interest. There is no mention about the time that it was erected, although there are some additions after its construction, everything indicates that it is not after the sixteenth century.
         Its exterior is especially characterized by counters cylindrical turning thin up at the top to finish in pinnacles as a truncated cone.
         The interior of a single ship only has a vault of edge with three legs where in the closing of each of them there is a medallion with a different design with the middle one with the cross of Christ. Each of these edges also ends up with different figures, cut in stone.
         In the main altar is the image of Santa Brígida, the patron saint of Marmelar. In the two altars, in the form of consoles, are Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of the Snows.
         Being the church of Marmelar, a excellent example of frescoes of the Alentejo, is certainly worthy of a little more careful visit.
