Beautiful area in South Switzerland. Easy to find and wheelchair accessible.
This is part of a large glacial causeway in Switzerland. Some examples of Glacier formations are Fjords, glaciated valleys, and horns are all erosional types of landforms, created when a glacier cuts away at the landscape. Another type of glacial landform is created by deposition, or what a glacier leaves as it retreats or melts away. In this causeway the formations left deep canyons where the glacier feeds a series of lakes. Lugano is a lake in Switzerland and Italy, located between Maggiore and Como lakes.
Straddling the border of the two countries, it has an area of 19 sq mi (49 sq km) and a maximum depth of 945 ft (288 m). Between Melide and Bissone. The resort town of Lugano, on its shores in Switzerland, is Italian in appearance. Lugano lies along a Glacial Causeway that runs from the Alps to the North. The edge of Lake Lugano (Italian: Lago di Lugano or Ceresio), which is situated between the lakes Lago Maggiore and Lago di Como, south of the Alps and the lakes are fed by glaciers north in the causeway in the Alps. The keys to a series of mountain passes are the towns of Chur (to the passes of San Bernardino, Julier, and Albula), Martigny (Great Saint Bernard), and Bellinzona (Saint Gotthard).
Lugano was sited on a small delta south of which the Gotthard route crossed Lake Lugano on the glacial causeway.
