Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the old Midland Railroad between Lindsay, and Peterborough. Please do not drive cars down these trails as it will draw attention to the cache location.

The year 1881 was a major change for the "Midland Railway", in that it completed buy-outs of its neighbouring smaller lines, and used the dormant charter of the Toronto & Ottawa Railway to construct four "missing links", one of them was between Peterborough and Omemee, completed in late 1883 after some engineering challenges with sink holes, for a direct connection between Peterborough and Lindsay. In Lindsay, a new entry from Omemee was decided upon. Instead of the curved alignment of the early PHL&B to the east bank of the Scugog, a bridge was built over the Scugog River at the east end of Durham Street. The track now came along just south of Durham Street to Cambridge Street, where it curved north to connect with the former Victoria Railway on Victoria Avenue. The Midland Ry. was formally leased to the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada (GTR) as of January 1, 1884, and was amalgamated into the GTR as of April 1, 1893. The GTR was in turn amalgamated into the new Canadian National Railways (CNR) on January 30, 1923. The last passenger train passed through Omemee on January 31, 1962, and the Lindsay - Peterborough line was abandoned in 1989.
