Pigtail Railroad Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

uccacher: Although I like the history behind this spot, trudging through the thick undergrowth in search of a micro is not my idea of fun. Thanks to all who found it.

Geocache Description:

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS CACHE AT NIGHT. Short but difficult bushwack through heavy undergrowth. Plenty of stuff to trip over and get stuck by so BE CAREFUL. GPSr indicated 19' accuracy.

Located at the stone abutment of a bridge that carried the Union & Titusville Railroad over the South Branch of French Creek.

The Union & Titusville Railroad originated in 1865 and was completed in 1871 at a cost of $700,000. Communities that the railroad passed through on its way from Titusville to the then Philadelphia & Erie line in what was then known as Union Mills (present day Union City) included Hydetown, Grays Mills, Tryonville, Centerville, Riceville and Lincolnville. The many twists and turns that the line took resulted in its nickname, "The Pigtail Railroad".

The purpose of the railroad was to haul oil from the wells in the Oil Creek region to the refineries located in Union Mills. Union Mills was also the location of many cooperages which supplied barrels to the oil region. The railroad was never very successful and there are few remenants left of it today. If you look across the creek, you'll be able to get a good view of the other abutment.

Terrain rating represents the worst conditions. It's a 2 at most in early Spring. Parking is available near the trailhead/gate. Please do not block the gate.
