Geocache Description:

A 35mm film cannister located near St Giles in the Fields church in the heart of London's West End. Usual magnets. Take care to replace the cache so it cannot be seen by passers-by.

St Giles in the Fields is known as the Poet's Church - indeed, the Poetry Society (visit link) meets in the Vestry House for it's Annual General Meeting.

The current church dates from 1734. There has, however, been a church on the site since the 11th century. St. Giles has a whole host of famous associations, memorials and burials worthy of a mention - the 12 martyrs convicted and executed as conspiritors in the Popish Plot against Charles II on the testimony of Titus Oates are buried near the north wall; the first victims of the Great Plague of 1665/66 have their last resting place here; Luke Hansard of Parliamentary record fame is also here; and two of colonial fame, Cecilius Calvert (the first proprietor of the Maryland Colony) and Dr William Balmain (a founder of the colony of New South Wales).

The wooden pulpit on the north side of the church is the one used by the John and Charles Wesley of Methodist fame.

The church is today known for its musical receitals, fitting giving its location in Theatreland.

This can be a busy old place, located as it is in central London. As with all urban caches stealth is needed, and standard warnings apply; please try to avoid acting overly suspiciously - if challenged, please explain about Geocaching, and leave the area!
