Wagontire Mountain Lookout Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Chief Paulina: Lakehunter joined me 8 years ago on an adventure to hide this cache on the top of a lookout mountain. It seems only appropriate that he join me in the verification/retrieval/archiving of this same cache.

The cache was in place, a bit damp but in good shape. It had been found once in 2009. It also had been logged in 2013 by a fire crew, tho not logged online.

Perhaps we tested the limits of our adventuring geocaching friends. Some said that they didn't do micros, others just never got up to this landmark in the Oregon desert.

I still don't understand the reason I had to travel 5-1/2 hours to verify an existing cache with no known reasons for concern. While I have enjoyed the last two visits, I have no intention of coming back up here in another 8 years to verify. It has been removed and now provides only a great memory.

Geocache Description:

A hiking adventure to the top of a desert mountain.

This is for my hiking, adventurer friends. You can score a lookout also. Minimum 5-1/2 miles round trip hike.

For the most part, this is an all day adventure. Wagontire Mountain is approximately 80 crow miles east of Bend. To get close, you will need to drive anywhere from 15-40 miles of high clearance road. The south approach is the easiest, the west is doable but longer. North and east are largely private property. Winter will have snow. Spring has mud. Summer has heat.

You will find this area to be very remote. The views are forever and, in spring, everything is so green with lots of flowers. There is a BLM Lookout on top at 6510'. You can see Steens Mtn, Abert Rim, Glass Butte and more.

This place also has some history. The Lost Meek Wagon train spent some time at Lost Hollow while searching for water. It was here that the leaders lost total confidence in Stephen Meek, their guide. Read more on that here. (visit link)
