Both the Tulip tree and the Lodge building are national monuments.
Louis-Michel Thibault, a Frenchman who came out as a military engineer for the Dutch East India Company, drew up the plans for the building. A contract was entered into with Hermann Schutte to build the Lodge with Anton Anreith undertaking the sculptural work. Anreith was born in Germany, but was of Hungarian origin and came to the Cape in 1777 as a soldier with the Dutch East India Company.
The elegant gateway entrance, which forms a magnificent welcome to the Lodge was designed by Thibault and built by Schutte in 1801.
The foundation stone of the Lodge was laid in February 1801 and the building was consecrated on Thursday 7 July 1803.
In 1892 a great fire totally burnt out the interior of the Lodge and it was rebuilt in 1893 with the building being re-consecrated on 27 of April of that year.
The fountain, surmounted by its statue of Hope, was erected in 1872 with the Tulip tree being planted around the same time.
When you arrive at the entrance, which is guarded by the SA Police Services, let them know that you are going to the Lodge. Please park outside as you will not be allowed to take your car into the area. You will be able to visit Mondays to Saturdays from 08h00 to 17h00, entrance is free and if you are lucky and find the caretaker available you may be able to persuade him to show you the interior of the building.
