The West Dewatto Shellfish Beds are a public shellfish harvesting area on the east side of Hood Canal.
There isn't much public beach access along this side of Hood Canal so this small strip of beach with it's great view of the Olympic Mountains across the water is a real treasure. In season you may be able enjoy some of the shellfish that make the beach their home.
Parking is poor along this section of road and only available on the beach side, not the inland side of the road. Fortunately this is near the end of a dead end road so the traffic should be very light.
The cache is a small lock-n-lock style barely concealed from view so be sure to rehide well. In case you are wondering, it's not hiding in the rock wall. If you happen to arrive around sunset as the clouds are lifting above the mountains across the water, as I did, try to remember, you came here to cache not just stare at the view.
