The church of "St. Mary the
Virgin" at Chislet is a strange site, its distinctive tower is a
local landmark. The central spire is of Norman construction and the
church shows signs of many extensions and alterations. The church
is surrounded by a small graveyard and land on the opposite side of
the road has also been used for burials.
The village of Chislet although now small was once the site of the
most northern colliery in Kent. The colliery was opened in 1919 and
produced coal on and off until 1968 when it was closed down. The
village of Hersden to the south of Chislet was built to house the
mainly Welsh miners.
When parking please make sure you keep your vehicle off of the
grass verge outside the church to prevent it from becoming churned
up.
If anybody would like to expand the
Church Micro series please do, we would just ask that you could let
Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church
numbers and names, to avoid duplication.
