Geocache Description:

One of the oldest Lutheran churches in the Baltic States, construction of which began in the 13th century. The tower offers viewing platforms, from which you can get a bird’s eye view over the roofs of the Old City, the center of Riga, and the Daugava River. First mention of St. Peter's church was made in the year 1209. The church is one of the best examples of Gothic architecture in the Baltics, meant to be the main church of the town. The church tower seemed to be jinxed, it was burned down and rebuilt many times trough the centuries. It first collapsed in 1666 and the last destruction it suffered was on St. Peter's Day in 1941. In 1973 the tower was restored for the last time. From the observation platform of the tower you can enjoy a wonderful eagle's-eye view of Riga. St Peter's Church has been built in the style typical of countries in the Baltic region, and this will be obvious upon first seeing its red bricks. A wooden church originally stood on the site, which was replaced by the current one in 1408. A lift takes visitors up to the top of the steel spire, which replaced a wooden one that was destroyed by German shelling during World War II. At the time, it was the highest church spire in Europe. The lift goes to an observation gallery, which offers fantastic views of Riga. Inside the church there is also an photo exhibition.
Location: Skarnu 19
Opening hours: Tues-Sun 10:00-17:15.
Admission: Free to visit the church, 2Ls for the tower, photo exhibition 0.50L.
1 LS is aproximetly 2 $ or 1.43 Euro.

You should remember that the cache is available only when the church is open (see above). To log this cache you have to go to the viewing platform. The cache is typical nano container (magnetic and without pencil - it contains just logbook) which you can find behind the fixing unit of the speaker. !!! Be very careful with magnet - sometimes it comes out together with logbook!!! As this place is very common for tourists - be very careful - sometimes there are a lot of them and it will be really hard to take it. I suggest to go there on rainy day...
