Maahiset (Eng. Gnome) eli maanväki ovat pieniä, ihmisenmuotoisia olentoja, joista on paljon suomalaisia kansantarinoita. Maahiset asuvat maan alla omassa maailmassaan. Usein maahisten maailma koetaan todellisen maailman peilikuvaksi, joka voi olla jopa ylösalaisin. Maahiset voivat olla ilkikurisia. Joskus metsässä kulkija saattaa joutua maahisten lumoihin, ja eksyä nurinkuriseen maailmaan, jota metsänpeitoksikin on kutsuttu. Maan väki voidaan käsittää myös taikavoimaksi, jota on maassa. Maanpäällisessä maailmassa maahiset ovat yleensä näkymättömiä; toisaalta tarustossa on joskus kerrottu maahisten saattavan näyttäytyä ihmisille muurahaisen muodossa.
Maahiset saattoivat toisinaan nousta maasta "ihmisten ilmoille". Joissain tarinoissa maahiset ovat vaihtaneet ihmislapsen tilalle oman lapsensa. Maahisen lapsesta, vaihdokkaasta on sitten voinut kasvaa rampa, vähäjärkinen tai sairas; toisinaan näitä vaihdokaslapsia on kuvattu syrjäytyneiksi, rumiksi ja hiljaisiksi. Samaan tapaan skandinaavit kertovat peikon voivan vaihtaa toisinaan oman lapsensa ihmislapsen tilalle. Omissa oloissaan maahisten sanottiin olevan rauhaa rakastavia, järjestelmällisiä, siistejä ja sopuisia.
Maanväki voi myös sairastuttaa ihmisen. Maahan kaatuva saattoi loukata maan väkeä, jolloin maan väki tartutti häneen sairauden, maan vihan eli maannenän. Sairautta voitiin nimittää myös sen aiheuttaneiden olentojen tai taikavoimien mukaan maahiseksi tai maanväeksi. Vaarallisena pidettiin myös kuuman veden kaatamista maahisten asuinsijoille tai tarpeiden tekemistä niille.
Maahiset kaivavat tunneleita maan alla kuten myyrät. Joskus maahinen on saattanut joutua tunneleittensa avulla kaupunkialueelle, jolloin se on saattanut aiheuttaa tuhoja. Näistä tuhoista syytetään yleensä myyriä.
Maahiset eroavat eräästä toisesta kansantarustossamme yleisesti esiintyvästä olentotyypistä, vetehisestä, siinä, että niiden ei tavallisesti kuvattu koskaan olleenkaan oikeita ihmisiä; vetehisten sen sijaan sanottiin olevan hukkumiskuoleman kokeneita vainajia.

Gnomes, i.e ground people are small, human shaped creatures and are the source of many Finnish folk legends. They live underground in their own world and often the world of gnomes is perceived as the opposite of real world, a reflection which can even be upside down. Gnomes can also be mischievous. Sometimes somebody wondering in the forests may have been charmed by the gnomes and ended up in their absurd world, also called the forest blanket.The ground people can also be understood as the magical force within the ground. Above ground level the gnomes are usually invisible, on the other hand there are also legends of gnomes showing themselves to humans in the form of ants.
Occasionally the gnomes might rise to the "civilization" and in some stories they even replaced a human child with one of their own. Then the child of gnomes, a substitute, may have grown to be crippled, feeble-minded or sick; in other stories these substitutes have been described as withdrawn, keeping to themselves, uggly and quiet. The scandinavian people have the same legend of trolls changing babies with their own offspring. Living in their own world the gnomes were said to be peace loving, organized, clean and compliant.
The ground people could also make humans sick. If someone fell to the ground they might have injured the gnomes, and then the gnomes would infect this persons with a disease, fury of ground i.e groundnose. The sickness could also be called gnome according to the creatures or magical forces that had inflicted it.To pour hot water or to do one's needs on the land of gnomes was also perceived as dangerous.
The gnomes dig tunnels underground the same way as moles do. Sometimes they might have dug their tunnels all the way to city areas and caused some kind of dammage. People usually blame moles for these damages.
The Finnish folk legends have also another very common creature called vetehinen i.e."waterly". The gnomes differ from these cretaures because they were never told to be humans in the first place whereas the "waterlies" were said to have been real people who had experienced death by drowning.
