As an English teacher and librarian, I wanted to combine these interests with my other
interest---geocaching. I have accomplished this in a series of caches of which this is the first. The first set of coordinates will give you the last name of a famous author in American Literature. THE CACHE IS NOT THERE !!!
Please don't disturb the residents while looking for the cache !

This is where the cache is. It is a metal tin about 3 1/2" X 1 1/2".
PLEASE NOTE: IF THERE ARE TWO AUTHORS WITH THE SAME LAST NAME, ALWAYS CHOOSE THE EARLIER ONE !
To find "x", convert the letters of the author's last name into numbers, using simple substitution. (A -1, B - 2, etc.) Thus, Poe would be 16-15-5.
Add them together (for Poe it would be 36), and subtract 1. Place a zero in front of your answer,
To find "y", simply add 524 to "x".
