A continuation of a short series of caches along the western end of the Basingstoke Canal started by Westie Walker and Douglasf
The Basingstoke Canal is in the south east of England and flows through the counties of Hampshire and Surrey. It originally ran from the Hampshire town of Basingstoke to its junction with the River Wey Navigation in Surrey 37 miles away.
Today, 32 miles of the original navigation have been restored from the Wey Navigation as far as North Wanborough in Hampshire, as a public amenity catering for boaters, walkers, canoeists, anglers and naturalists. Refer to the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society for more information.
It has 29 locks, all but one in Surrey, which together raise the canal 204 feet from the River Wey.
The cache itself is a 500ml click-lock box containing a log book and the usual swaps. It is situated very near to a military Bailey Bridge over the canal and it has particularly soggy memories for me.
In the 1980s, when I was serving with the army in Aldershot, we were regularly run to the bridge, instructed to climb over the top and return using the hand over hand method underneath. This inevitably resulted in most of the unit taking an inpromptu swim and having to run back soaking wet. Happy days!!!
