Inaugurado a 16 de Junho de 2007, o açude insuflável é um projecto inovador, com tecnologia de ponta importada do Japão. É parte integrante do projecto Polis e criação do PURA - Parque Urbano Ribeirinho de Abrantes. (ver mais detalhes em: "Passeio à beira Tejo...[Abrantes]")
O açude veio permitir a criação de um extenso plano de água. A zona ribeirinha de Abrantes tem agora um espelho de água permanente com cerca de 50 hectares e é fundamental para a dinamização da zona que já foi, também, totalmente remodelada em termos urbanisticos e paisagísticos em ambas as margens do Tejo.
Com este investimento a população local tem agora um espaço de lazer ao nível dos melhores do país, abrindo portas ao investimento no turismo atraindo assim muitos mais visitantes à cidade.
Foram criadas várias infra-estruturas de suporte ao usufruto da zona ribeirinha, quer para desportos náuticos, entre os quais sobressai a canoagem já muito popularizada, quer também para desportos de praia, como o voleibol, o rugby, futebol entre outros. É também de salientar o novo uso balnear até aqui inexistente.
Têm também vindo a ser feitos investimentos na área da restauração na zona ribeirinha, coisa que até aqui não tinha sido aposta do investimento privado.
É sem dúvida um investimento que foi dispendioso, mas que tem retorno a médio prazo e requalifica uma zona, naturalmente bastante rica, que tinha vindo a ser menosprezada ao longo dos anos.
O açude insuflável - alguns dados técnicos.
O açude possui cerca de 240 metros de comprimento e é composto por uma estrutura de betão armado onde assentam quatro comportas insufláveis que se adaptam à irregularidade e sazonalidade do leito do rio. Inclui, ainda, uma passagem para peixes na margem esquerda sobre a plataforma rochosa existente, permitindo a circulação de diversas espécies piscícolas.
Este investimento constitui uma obra de engenharia hidráulica única em Portugal, destacada pela sua complexidade técnica.
É constituído por:
- Escada de peixes;
- Vão descarregador com 21,75 m de largura, equipado com uma comporta insuflável de borracha com 1 m de altura;
- Três vãos descarregadores com 46 m de largura cada, equipados com comportas insufláveis de borracha com 3,2 m de altura.
- Vão descarregador fixo com 40 m de largura, constituído por uma soleira espessa de betão do tipo Creager.
- Descarga de caudal ecológico.
Trata-se de um açude móvel, cujas comportas permanecerão insufladas para caudais no rio compreendidos entre 8 m^3/s e 750 m^3/s, mas que serão totalmente desinsufladas para dar passagem a cheias sempre que o caudal de 750 m^3/s seja ultrapassado.

The inflatable dam or weir is a recent project that was inaugurated on 16 June 2007, managing Japan technology. It's part of the Aquapolis project and the PURA - Urban Riverside Park of Abrantes (more details in this cache page: "Passeio à beira Tejo...[Abrantes]")
The inflatable dam allowed an huge water mirror. The riverside has now a 50 acres permanent water mirror which has a massive importance to the surrounding areas on both Tagus River margins that were also re-designed to embrace this new way of life. Natural and human made environment were reorganized.
This investment offer to the local population is something you just can't ignore. There are leisure areas at the best level, and the turistic window is now opened attracting more and more visitors to the town.
Several support infra-structures were built along the riverside area to benefit all the possible activities, such as water sports that became more popular than ever, and also beach sports like voleyball, rugby, soccer and much other. It also allowed the city to have a beach area.
Some investments have been made in the restaurant/bar areas. Private investors didn't even think about that prior to the dam construction and riverside remodulation. This rehabilitation was expensive, that's unquestionable, but the benefits and the long term return of the investment is also a fact that becomes more real as time goes by.
The inflatable dam/weir - technical data.
The dam has 240 meters wide and its a concrete and iron gravity structure composed by 4 inflatable hatches/locks/gates that adapt to the river flow of each season by the minute. It also includes a fish free passage on the left margin of the rocky platform which allows safe passage to all kinds of fish species.
This investment is a huge and complex peice of hydraulic engeniering, unique in Portugal.
It is composed by:
- One fish ladder;
- One spillway span 21,75 m wide, equipped with rubber inflatable gate with 1 m high;
- Three spillway spans, each 46 m wide and equipped with 3,2 m high rubber inflatable locks/gates;
- One 40 m wide concrete ogee crest spillway span composed by a massive sole of Creager type;
- One Ecological Flow Outlet;
This is a mobile weir, whose rubber gates will remain inflated for river flows between 8 m^3/s and 750 m^3/s. Above this, the gate will automatically deflate.

A cache
É uma cache regular, e sem grandes dificuldades de acesso. Há um local para estacionar a viatura muito perto da cache, a cerca de 50 a 70 metros de distância.
Depois de descobrirem a cache podem ainda tentar descer até ao açude, se a cancela não estiver fechada. Mais abaixo terão uma placa que diz que o acesso a pessoas não autorizadas é interdito, mesmo antes de um local óptimo para estacionar o carro e ir ver o açude muito mais de perto.
Claro que ficará ao vosso critério obedecer à imposição da placa, ou ignorá-la.
Para completar a cache não é necessário desobedecer qualquer regra imposta, quer por essa placa ou outra qualquer.

The cache
This is a regular cache, no major difficulties attached. There is a great place to park your vehicle really near the container, at about 50 to 70 meters or so.
After logging you might want to visit the dam from below. Well, you can try and follow that first road we were following before and, if the gate is opened, we can crosse it. Down that road you will find a signal that says "Not allowed to non-authorized people" just before a great parking area.
Now it is up to you either respect it and go back or just ignore it and go have a closer look at the dam.
To complete the cache you don't have to disobey any rules either by that signal or any other.
