I was on my way to "Schedule 40 Redux" by ZenGuru and decided to
place a cache that was on the way. This is a great place to rest
after the long grunt up the Mano trail. This distinctive landmark
(MNOSLD) is mentioned in Mike Coltrin's "Sandia Mountain Hiking
Guide", which I just got for an early birthday present from my
brother. I strongly recommend getting the book if you enjoy hiking
in the Sandia Mountains as much as I do. There are faint volunteer
trails that go north and south from the cache. If you head north
you will find 2 other caches that are dedicated to Mouser (Chris),
who recently passed away. Moki also has several caches in the area
that are worth finding. Bring water and sunscreen in the summer
months and be prepared for snow in the winter months. The trail
takes it's name from a stone artifact that was reportedly found in
the area, a "Mano." The mano and metate were tools used for
grinding corn and other seeds into a powdery meal. Mano is the
spanish word for "hand." The hand held mano was rubbed back and
forth across the flat, rough stone metate to grind the material to
the desired consistency. The views are awesome in all directions so
don't forget your camera. Enjoy the hike and the views!! (The cache
container is a small Lock n' Lock container covered by a rock under
the baby tree, that's under the bigger tree.)
